If you’re dreaming of portraits in Sedona, a little planning goes a long way—especially when it comes to traffic, timing, and location.

When to Visit & Timing Your Photos

Traffic in Sedona can get heavy, especially on weekends and during peak tourist seasons. To make the most of your session (and avoid sitting in your car when you’d rather be in front of the camera), I recommend arriving early. For the best light, sunset is magical here—the red rocks practically glow as the sun dips behind them. Starting your photos about 2 hours before sunset gives us time for a relaxed session, beautiful variety, and that perfect golden light.

Our session often begins at Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village, a charming, Spanish-style plaza filled with archways, stone walls, and climbing ivy. While it’s a popular and sometimes busy spot, it offers plenty of shaded areas and gorgeous textures that create timeless, romantic portraits. Plus, it gives us a softer, more intimate setting before heading out to the desert trails.

Hitting the Trails: Lovers Knoll & Cathedral Rock

After Tlaquepaque, we can head into the

heart of Sedona’s natural beauty. Lovers Knoll is one of my favorites—easy to access and surrounded by sweeping red rock views. It’s peaceful, romantic, and the perfect place to pause and soak in the moment.

For another iconic backdrop, nothing beats Cathedral Rock. While the full hike is strenuous (and not ideal in dress shoes or formal wear), there’s a beautiful viewpoint from the back side of Cathedral Rock that’s easily accessible. This spot gives you all the drama and beauty of Sedona without the climb—making it one of my go-to locations for couples.
