Sedona is a dream destination for photography, and one of my favorite trails to recommend—whether for couples, anniversaries, or adventurous engagement sessions—is the Little Horse Trail. With just the right balance of ease and epic scenery, this 4-mile out-and-back hike takes you to Chicken Point, a sweeping red-rock overlook that feels made for portraits.

Why Little Horse Trail Works for Photography

Unlike some of Sedona’s more strenuous hikes, Little Horse is rated easy to

moderate. That means you can comfortably wear your session outfits, carry a few props, and not arrive sweaty or winded. The gentle incline keeps it accessible for couples who want the views without a difficult trek.

Along the way, you’ll pass unique rock formations like the Praying Hands, catch glimpses of the Chapel of the Holy Cross, and eventually reach views of Cathedral Rock and Thunder Mountain. These natural landmarks make stunning backdrops at different points of the trail, giving variety to your gallery.

The Magic of Chicken Point

At the trail’s end, Chicken Point opens up into a wide slickrock plateau with panoramic views. This spot glows at golden hour—the red rocks reflect the setting sun, creating soft, romantic light. For engagement photos, it feels like standing on top of the world together.

Since it was once a famous jeep trail destination, Chicken Point also has a bit of rugged, adventurous charm, but without the need for a bumpy ride. Instead, you’ll arrive hand in hand, ready for breathtaking portraits.

Best Time for Photos

  • Golden Hour: About 1–2 hours before sunset, the light is warm and flattering. The reds and oranges of the rocks intensify, making for dreamy, timeless portraits.

  • Morning Sessions: If you prefer fewer crowds, sunrise and early mornings can be equally beautiful, with soft light and cooler temperatures.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Parking & Permits: You’ll need a Red Rock Pass for parking at the trailhead unless you arrive via the Sedona Shuttle.

  • Crowds: This trail is shared with hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. We may need to pause occasionally, but it’s part of the flow.

  • Pets: Dogs are welcome on a leash, but in hot months the rock gets very warm—booties are recommended.

  • Shade: Limited shade—bring water, sunscreen, and a hat for comfort between photos.

Final Thoughts

If you’re planning engagement or anniversary photos in Sedona and want variety, accessibility, and that iconic red-rock drama, Little Horse Trail is one of the best choices. From intimate shaded moments among desert trees to wide-open landscapes at Chicken Point, it’s a trail that beautifully tells a love story.

✨ Ready to book your Sedona session? I’d love to help plan your adventure, guide you through the trail, and capture your story against this unforgettable backdrop.
